I've got a 6 year old 40g LPG G.E. water heater.   We also have a water softener.    I pulled the anode rod for the first time today.  Needless to say, it's gone except for the central wire and one inch of material at the bottom.   When I look into the burner area, it looks pretty good.  The floor of the tank has some white residue on it but otherwise looks quite good.  The vent has what looks to be mostly surface rust on it and one blister that I can see.  There is no evidence of leaking whatsoever.

My question is, would it be a complete waste of money to put a new anode rod in it at this point?  I ordered one but now I'm not sure if I'm wasting it.  I read something that said it won't last since the last one was allowed to be fully consumed (?).  Our last water heater was a Bradford that lasted exactly 6 years before the bottom rusted out.

I don't mind gambling the $70 cost of the anode rod if there is some chance it will prolong the life of this unit but if there's no chance I'll store it for the next water heater.

I think I'd put in the anode and see what happens. Your tank doesn't sound in imminent danger of failure. Also, the new anode is going to have about 25 percent more metal on it than the original. Put it in and check it in one year and tell us how much is left. Then we can give you a better idea of what to expect.

Ok, so it's one year later and I pulled the anode rod to check it.  It's about 35% gone.  That's pretty good news I think, given the water softner and the fact that the last rod was fully consumed for some period of time before I replaced it.  The current rod should last another year.   And the tank?  Who knows?  Hopefully several more years.  :=)

Dave,

Thanks for coming back and reporting. I like success stories. I think it's likely your tank will soldier on.
