I had this problem - black, greasy particles coming from tub and shower outlets. Had flex copper hw heater outlet pipe to house supply. I found that both rubber washers had deteriorated and were producing the black "stuff." I replaced the flex line and the problem disappeared. Possibly it could be remedied by cleaning out the washers which were cooked on the inside of the connector flex line, and replacing just the washers, but the pipe wasn't too expensive so I replaced the line.

The black particles are more than likely manganese that has settled out of the water and collected in the bottom of the water heater. Manganese will be like tar and will smear when pressed down. I've seen this numerous times. If it is "clear water" manganese, you will need to either oxidize it with an air injection tank and filter it out or remove it through a water softener. If the particles come out of the well an actual "partical" then you can remove the particles with a sediment filter. Ion exchange)water softener) is the most common way to remove manganese however.

I suppose this is possible, but so far, every person who has come here with this problem has tracked it down to disintegrating rubber in water treated with chloramines. Washers, like Clayton had, or the infamous braided stainless steel flex lines with a rubber lining. Randy Schuyler
