Hello,

We're converting our oil-fired water heat to electric.   We'll be getting a 50 gallon tank, and I was wondering which are the best brands/models to look at these days?   Also, are electric heaters energy-star rated?   I'd like to get one of those if possible.

Thank you!

For the typical offerings from the major manufacturers, I'd read the parts of the site we've prepared regarding purchases and then compare spec sheets for different models, paying attention to anode type, insulation thickness and EF.

But the Cadillac of electrics is the Marathon heater, which has three inches of insulation and a plastic-lined tank with a lifetime warranty.

Are Time of Use rates available in your area?  I bought a 105 gallon Marathon so I can heat it off-peak only and pay only $0.047/kWh for the energy.

Do broken records chime?  Anyway, there are efficiency measures to look at that could do a LOT to reduce the demand.  Start by Googling "Gary Klein structured plumbing".  There is a lot to be learned in making plumbing systems deliver better performance inexpensively.  Next, look into GFX, Power Pipe and Retherm shower heat exchangers.  You might be able to reuse 60% of the heat that goes down the shower drain.

Looking at ways to put more heat into the system, check out "tempering tank" or possibly, http://www.solarattic.com/.  Of course, direct solar thermal might be a thought too    With these things, your hot water demand could be cut dramatically.

Yours,  Larry
