Hello: It looks like you have a side arm heater that's missing the internal stuff. That stuff would have been a gas burner at the bottom and a copper coil that hooked up at a hole in the back side and wound up to the top where there is likely another hole. This unit would have been low on the side of a tank or "range boiler". When you wanted hot water, you would light the Lion heater with a match and wait for the tank to heat. When it was hot enough, you would shut it off and go take a well earned bath That's the generality of it. I'm happy to try to answer more specific questions also. HI LARRY, thank you for taking a minute to send some information out to me. i really appreciate it !! would you happen to know if the PITTSBURG WATER HEATER COMPANY is still in operation, or whether it is now operating under another name? the history of the model i have and it's manufacturer seems the most interesting to me at this point. i have found an advertisement from the company published in a very old magazine(1922) but there is no other pertinent information, that i have yet been able to find on the company. perhaps i can restore the water heater, but knowing it's original paint color and internal set up will make all the difference in doing so. i am even wondering if lead paint was used... the current color is a weathered white base coat with red paint on some of the raised surfaces. thanks again, and if anyone else has any additional information, please do post it !!! AARON

Hello: I have an ad for a tank type heater Pittsburg made in 1948, but that's the most recent thing I found. I'll assume they merged with another manufacturer as that's what happens in this industry. Although heaters sometimes came in other colors like green, mostly manufacturers made heaters black. Japan black or what I think of as colored varnish seemed to be used directly on the cast iron. Gold lettering and trim made it pretty. Today, I'd use engine paint. Have a look under "Fun Stuff" here for some old heaters. Pittsburg made some pretty stuff. There is one heater with nine lion's heads on it In 1945, Pittsburg was fifty years old, according to an ad I found. Happy research! Yours, Larry

Hello! I have a Lion model 1-J that I am in the process of restoring. It shares the original patent of oct. 1 1907 & additional of Jan. 4, 1916. No dout a later model. The only information I have found is in an engineering encyclopedia from 1906 which shows a couple generic drawings. You can email me if you have any questions. I will eventually get around to taking some pictures that I'm willing to share. idgitt@msn.com Mike
