What is the R-value for a state censible 510e PRV 50 NORI6 F?
it is a 50 gallon gas heater.

how much more efficient are other models of similiar capacity?

which models would you recommend?

what might the savings be by replacing it on a per year basis?

thanks very much.

Efficiency of any WH can be increased by addition of an insulating jacket and heat traps.  Jacket only needs to extend down to just below bottom element.  Don't use extra insulation on a plastic jacket WH like a Marathon since adding more insulation will draw the heat out and might soften the plastic jacket.  See Heat Traps under Tanklets.  Stopping convective heat flow from the WH with heat traps will cut a lot of ambient losses.

State is quite good about supplying spec sheets that have R values and other information. I suggest you go to its site and hunt this one up. Water heaters also have EF factors, which can serve as a means of comparing one water heater to another, as long as you bear in mind that electrics usually have higher EFs than gas, without necessarily being a better choice, that depending on how fast you want hot water and what your electrical rate structure is. And that the government's EF program is similar to the EPA's mileage estimates -- little bearing on real-world use.

We don't recommend one heater over another except in general ways that are described in sections that can be found under The Basics on the home page.
