Hello, I have a 2-year-old gas water heater that has been making a strange noise for approximately 1 month. The noise is pretty much constant. When the plumber came to look at it, he drained the tank but didn't find much sediment and said that the heater had a loop to prevent sediment. He said that the noise might be because the fiberglass lining inside the tank has pulled away and air is getting between the tank and the tank's lining. Could it be something else? Can it be fixed? The noise is keeping us awake at night and bothering us during the day. I don't know what to do. Thank you, Genevieve

Read the section about sediment under The Basics. Among other things, it will tell you that it doesn't take much sediment to make noise and that draining a water heater is completely ineffectual in getting rid of sediment. As for the "loop," it's ineffectual, too. Is it a rumbling, popping, snapping noise? Do you hear it only when the tank is firing? If so, then it is sediment noise. If it is something different, describe it for us. Randy Schuyler

Hello, I don't think it just makes the noise when it fires up because it seems to make the noise most of the time but I'm not sure. After the plumber drained the heater, it was still making the noise. The noise is more rumbling, thumping, not popping and not snapping. I'm sorry ..... I don't think I'm very good at describing the sound. Thank you, Genevieve

Hello: Let's narrow down the problem. The knob on top of the gas control has three positions: on, off and pilot. Turn it to the pilot position and see if the noise stops. It could take a few minutes to get quiet. Any effect? Is there a circulating pump? Those can make noise all the time if that's how they are set up. Have a look at your water meter, but make sure all water use is off. Is the meter showing any signs of usage? If so, there is a plumbing leak. Let us know what you find and possibly we can meddle some more Yours, Larry

Hello I think my brother-in-law is coming this weekend to try and help me figure out where the noise is coming from and what it is. I can't actually hear the noise when I am standing next to the water heater. When I'm standing by the water heater, I can hear the noise in the distance but not actually from the tank itself. I can basically hear the noise throughout the house but not from the tank itself. I was wondering if the noise was created by the heat trap nipples would I hear the noise directly from the tank. My gas heater is Kenmore Power Miser 12. Thank you, Genevieve

That may, indeed, be it. Heat trap nipples are notorious for making noise and they broadcast it via the piping. Randy Schuyler
