This morning i discovered my water ehater was not working. The pilot light was out. I removed the outer cover, looked through the window and saw the pilot light was not on. I followed the instructions and relit the pilot, replaced the outer cover, turned to on, turned up thermostat... nothing. So I do the process again, this time not replacing the outer cover so I can see whats going on. BIngo, it works, after relighting the pilot the burner comes on when i turn up the thermostat. I'm quite proud of myself as I replace the outer cover, when suddenly the burner shuts off. After many retreies I discover the same things happens every time i replace the outer cover. Right now it's burning, and has been for the past 20 minutes, byut thats only because I ahve not replaced the outer cover yet. mystified, Chris

Tell us more. What brand of water heater? How old? Where is it located? In an open space? A closed space? Randy Schuyler

Hello: Is it possible the cover is somehow shorting out the thermocouple? Put some electrical tape on the thermocouple anyplace where it could contact the cover and try putting the cover back. Let us know what happens Yours, Larry

Go to Troubleshooting, then Lingo to see what a thermocouple looks like. How open is this room it is in? Is there a door to it? Does the door have vents? It sounds as if it's not getting enough oxygen. Randy Schuyler
