Hello,
My wife & I are getting some issues taken care of in the house we just purchased.  First is replacing the water heater which is falling apart.  I've done a lot of reading on your site & forums.
I've picked out a AO Smith tank from Sears that I'm planning on buying next week.  The questions I have are regarding our water quality & how it will work with a new tank.
The neighbor said that he took the anode out of his tank because it started smelling real bad after ~8mo.  Our city water is very hard and contains a lot of iron.  The house has a water softener which we plan to keep using but I want to make sure I install my water heater right so it doesn't go bad after 1yr.
What would you recommend I do to remedy this?  Because we have very hard water and a softener I'm thinking of getting the powered anode.  For this do I remove all anodes from the new tank?  Is this powered anode something that will not wear out like mag or al anodes?
I plan on connecting the tank to the plumbing with flex copper lines, does this help at all?

I'm also looking into whole house water filters to help with the problem.  I'm planning on getting a 3 stage system which filters out solids, iron & then has a charcoal filter.  Will this help both my softener and the water heater?

Thanks,
Chad

The powered anode will solve the odor problem and still protect the tank from rusting out. It is self-adjusting for different water conditions.

All sacrificial anodes have to come out of the tank or there will still be odor. The powered anodes are nominally warranted for seven years, but the factory says they should last 50-100.

As to the filters, that's out of my area of expertise, but maybe some of the other folks who answer questions here will know the answer.

Hello:  I'm not sure if you're looking at electric or gas powered for your heater.  If electric, a Marathon heater might be worth considering as they have no anode at all and don't mind difficult water.
