My hot water heater is around 8 years old. From time to time, the pilot light will go our and I have to have someone crawl into the crawl space and light it. I noticed that right before it (pilot) goes out, the water heats to boiling and then the next day, without fail, the pilot goes out.

It started a year ago and would happen every 5 months or so, most recently, it is happening every month, and today it has gone out twice. Do you have any suggestions. Do they sell these models anymore. Does anyone sell models that would fit under crawl space. I've heard that I will be forced to move the heater once this one goes out, to a area where I can use a taller unit. I really do not want to spend the money it would require to move a gas tank into a room that does not have gas outlets. Please help

I'm not much on gas WHs.  If you end up having to move the WH you might consider going electric.  A plumber will probably say you have to pull a 25 or 30 amp circuit and wire it at 240 volts.  But it will work just fine wired at 120 volts and only draws one half the current (9.4 amps if nameplate is 4500 watts at 240 volts).  However it takes four times as long to heat.

I'm going to stick my neck out a little -- meaning I might be wrong -- but I believe that even a gas heater has an ECO switch, a sort of high limit and that it is tripping. Defective thermostat, perhaps. You should have a plumber take a good look at that. If it ever failed, your water heater could blow up, which is a bit more of a nuisance than having to relight the pilot.
