Water is leaking from the top of the heater. It is a top plumed heater. The water looks like it is leaking from the inside of the inlet fittings to the outside. When I used towels to soak up the water the fitting wills with water instantly. The pipes and fittings are dry. I also turned the water off to the heater and turned the pilot off and drained the tank and it is still leaking. Is the heater shot?

The question is, what is leaking? If it is plumbing, it can be fixed. If it is the tank, it can't. If you have a copper flex line, you might consider replacing it and see what happens. You might also be able to take out the nipple, wrap it with six wraps of Teflon and put it back in. But most tanks that start leaking out of the nipple ports are goners. Randy Schuyler

It's leaking out the nipple.
