We have a terrible whining noise in our pipes ever since we had some plumbing work done in our basement. I was told to drain the hot water heater and drain all the pipes to force any air out. This did not work & we still have the whining noise. However, before I was going to drain the tank, I started opening a panel on the front of it to look for a power switch. I noticed all this insulation so I figured this was the wrong spot. I was shoving the insulation back inside the panel with my screwdriver when I felt/saw a spark. Ever since then, when we try to use the hot water (especially in our shower), it flips the hot water heater breaker off. Sometimes we have no hot water, sometimes just a little. Did I ruin a fairly new tank by causing this spark? I haven't opened up that panel since I did this. Or is the air in the pipes somehow ruining our tank?

Probably not "ruin," but you may have done something to affect the operation of the upper thermostat, element or control. You should get a plumber out to make sure everything is OK. Oh, and you should not have had to drain the tank in the first place. That doesn't get air out of the lines. It puts it in. The water is under pressure and all that is necessary to flush air out is to open your faucets and let the water run. When it stops spitting air, you're done. I'd get a second opinion on the cause of the whining noise. Randy Schuyler Last edited on Mon Jun 23rd, 2008 05:11 pm by elenano |

Hello: This whining noise... do you have a pump for quick hot water? If there is a recirculation line pump, it could be air bound. If so, unplug it to see if the noise stops. At least you'll know if that's the source of the noise. Now, you should know you're lucky to be asking these squestions. Sticking a metal screwdriver into 240 volts could have been the last thing you ever did Yours, Larry
