Our 11 year old Bradford White Electric water heater is making clanking/knocking noises, the cold intake pipe is very hot, and we have air in all our water pipes inside and out -- is the air caused from the water heater?  If so, is it our best bet to just replace it?

Hello:  Turn power off to the heater and see if the "air" problems go away.  It could be steam that's being caused by a thermostat not shutting off the heater's element when the water is hot enough

And if it is steam you'll want to check your safety release valve to see why it is not opening.
