I've got a 10 year old Bradford-White, 75 gal gas hot water heater w/ recir. pump. The water is hot in the morning; however, some evenings the water is luke warm. I've adjusted the therm. to a hotter setting and this seems to help; however, it has to be almost scalding before it works....this isn't an everyday thing. Some evenings the water is hot, other days it isn't.
on one of the evenings when the water was luke warm, I turned up the thermostat and the flame came on, but when I turned it back to the original setting the flame when out - even though the water was still luck warm.
Is this a thermostat issue or is it time to get a new heater?
thanks for the help,
jerry

Hello: A few things come to mind. If you have hard water, sediment could have built up enough to bury the thermostat's probe, in the tank. If so, the thermostat cannot react to the true water temperature... If the dip tube is damaged, cold water mixing with hot could be having an effect... A cross connection in the lines could be involved and mix down the hot... Water could be getting pulled backwards through the recirc line if the check valve that's supposed to be there is not working... Plenty to look at

Thank you for the input.
We do have hard water but have a water softener installed. I had the tank flushed and it seems to be working fine. However, this was a problem that didn't happen all the time. Some nights water was hot, some nights it was luke warm. If the dip stick is damaged wouldn't the water always be luke warm???
Also, do thermostats that are going bad either work or not work?? How does one tell if the check valve is bad?
thanks again for all the help,
Jerry

| On the day and time you have luke warm water, draw some water directly from the water heater preferably through the TP valve. If that isn't possible draw it from the spigot. This will tell you if it is a intermittent problem with the heater of to look elsewhere.
