I have two gas water heaters about 15 years old.  Lately the water pressure from the hot taps throughout the house has been quite low.  When you first turn the hot tap on flow looks fine.  Reduces to small flow over a few seconds as the hot water comes to the tap.  Cold water pressure is fine.  I drained a bit of water from each heater and the water ran clear.  But something is seriously reducing the hot water flow somewhere in the system.

Help!

Hello:  In "Tanklets" you'll find info on how to backflush plumbing.  That could help.  Also, with the older, flat washer type fixtures, when the screw holding the washer is loose or the washer worn, hot can slow down in the way you've described.  You've got a little sleuthing to do

What kind of nipples were used on the water heaters? Fifteen years is long enough ago that plastic-lined steel might not have been used. Plain steel will gunk up with rust, while brass may cause a reaction within the tank to the same effect. I'd check that first.

I've got the same hot water flow problem.  I'm getting a loud noise like pipes banging on something and then the flow is greatly reduced in one bathroom but will work in the adjoining bath.  Then we get another noisy bang and the flow switches bathrooms.  Cold water flow is just fine.  We also flushed 10 gallons of hot from tank but problem is still there.
