I have a 10 year old AO Smith unit. It is slowly leaking from the top of the unit where the anode rod is. I cant remove the rod. Is this a sign of needing a new heater or maybe just a new anode rod?

It's a sign of needing a new heater. Be sure to read the other sections on this site regarding buying before you make your choice.

Hello:  I'll add that if you check the various fittings on top of the tank and find water is not coming from those fittings, it must be leaking through the tank.  I try to make things as dry as I can around each fitting and then see if water seeps directly from the fitting.  Once I've checked the fittings and found no leak, I know for sure the tank is done.

I've saved a number of heaters that way ;)

Yours,  Larry
