Thanks for the information on the anode, in my area it seems water heaters seem to last twice there quoted life span but of course nothing is made like it was in years past.  I'll probably skip the blanket because looking at the heater there are a lot of vents on the sides i rather not block or add dust to.

My water heater just broke...I have never in my life had to deal with/learn about a water heater before...your website is great. Called a local plumber who quoted $1235 to install a Bradford White (including the heater). When I asked if this model had a separate port for the magnesium anode rod, he said Bradford White does not make it, and he has never in his career installed a second rod, only installs the water heaters that the suppliers give him. (At least he knew what an anode was...most of the other plumbers I called had no idea what an anode was.)

Q1: I went on the BW website and was bewildered...have no idea which model is suitable for a detached house...website also only mentioned the combo anode. Can you please provide the specific BW model number that you mentioned that has its own port?

Q2: Is the quote ($1230) excessive? What is a reasonable installation fee?

Q3: Your website listed one plumber in CA, in San Francisco...I live south of L.A. Anyone you can recommend down here? (O.C.)

Thanks!

The only way I could tell is by going through the spec sheets and looking at their top-view diagram. The ones with a hex anode are the GX-2-25S6BN and GX-1-55S6BN. I gather from the specs that they are 25-gallon and 55-gallon, respectively. However, there are several other models that have an optional top temperature/pressure relief valve port that could be used to install a hex anode.

I mention that because the anode isn't the only thing, or even the most important thing you should look at. You should be looking for a tank that will supply what you need, have good insulation, fit your budget and other considerations. It may be that one of these latter will be a better fit for all that.

Most residential heaters are in the 34,000 to 40,000-Btu range, while these two models are 78,000 and 80,000. They'll produce a lot of hot water, but I'm guessing they'll be more expensive than the others because of that.

As to plumbers, don't know. As to pricing, that's about in the middle of things. I've heard as low as $600 and as high as $1500 -- and the numbers keep changing. Do understand that the plumber is charging, not just for the installation, but for obtaining the new heater, getting rid of the old one, and maybe pulling a city permit to be legal. On the other hand, the plumber should also be willing to accommodate you. You're paying him, not the other way around.

Thank you very much for responding so quickly with your VERY helpful information and advice! I am truly grateful...you and your website are truly amazing.

I will check out the specs between the two (the one quoted by the plumber was the U4-5036FRN which has the T/P valve that could be converted...although I will have to find out if doing this then disables the T/P valve function) as well as the pricing.

Be at peace on the T&P. What it means when they say that is that there is also a side port for the valve.

I would advise you to call 3 different plumbers/water heater installers to check pricing and ask what is all included.  Also stop by a Sears or Home Depot and just see how much the tank and installation from them would be.

Living in Cali. you might have a lot of codes and stuff that need to be satisfied where other areas in the country people don't have to worry.  I know when checking heaters a few sites I went to had a box to show heaters that are allowed for install in Cali.

That is really good advice. I'd forgotten, among other things, that the South Coast Air Quality Management District (L.A.) requires low-NOX heaters, although I hear that soon the rest of us will have to buy them, too. Look forward to a jump in water heater prices.
