The water heater is a 40 gallon reliance 501 I was wondering if anybody out there had any knowledge of a step by step method to replace one of the heating elements. I am clueless on the mechanics of a water heater on how to access the internals of the heater itself.

My plan is to drain it and flush it out with water to remove all debris that is inside of the container. After that I plan on shutting off the water and turning off the power. From this point on I would appreciate any input that can be give to assist me in this project

I really recommend that you get a plumber to do the service, not forgetting to check and possibly change the anode, along with cleaning out the tank. You've just said you don't know what you're doing. Even with a list of instructions, you could still electrocute yourself. It's easy with electric water heaters. I'm not prepared to accept the liability for that!

I appreciate that your worried about me getting electrocuted. As the last I checked water heaters don't have capacitors so once I cut the power it shouldn't be a problem I was just trying to get some information before I attempt this. Thanks to all that posted and thanks for your concern

Hello:  I suspect Randy was concerned because you said you would turn off the power after doing things with the heater.  Power always is the first thing to be turned off.  You don't want to wind up being the capacitor

Yours,  Larry
