To explain things a bit, I'm a small producer (farmer) in Kentucky (that may explain a lot) and I'm building a Whizbang Chicken Scalder.  The basic project consists of finding a usable gas fired water heater, cutting off the top to make a hot water pot with a chimney, and then replacing the burner controls and adding a frame assembly to dunk chickens for scalding prior to plucking.  You can google 'whizbang chicken scalder' to get more info and links to a youtube video.

Anyhow, my BIL is in the water heater business and he got me a very lightly used 40 gallon natural gas water heater.  I did all the physical modifications and am now at the burner and burner controls part of the project.  I have a Bradford White model MI403S6EN12 serial TJ6972195-131 heater and need to change the NG burner to LP.

Bradford-White won't even discuss this, let alone sell any parts for fear of liability, and I can't find a cross reference that might give me the LP model number equivalent heater for the NG tank that I've got.

I'm not asking anyone to stick their neck out, and I'm totally good with assuming all liability on this project.  I'm an electrical engineer and have been involved in maintenance and shop work all my life, so I have enough skill to know when I need help.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to go about finding an LP burner that will fit this unit?

Thanks in advance

Hello:  You're not doing this propane thing in your basement, right?!! :D  I'd find a tank that has just failed due to a leak, has propane control and burner and simply put the entire matched assembly on your chicken scalder.  You will need to be sure the length of the thermostat probe on the back of the control is right for your tank.  Aside from that you're likely good to go.  I will ask, how do you know the BTU input will b sufficient?

Yours,  Larry

lol.  I wasn't BORN in Kentucky.  No, the chicken scalder is an outdoor device.

Thanks for the response.  I'll contact some of the local plumbers and see if they'll cooperate.  I don't know how 'afraid' of being sued folks are in this area.  A lot of times you can get things done if you 'know' someone.

As for the BTU level, I'm only trying to heat water to 145F.  The project designer has done this already prior to publishing the plan book, so I'm confident that even if it takes a bit longer with LP, I'll eventually get to the needed temperature.
