Re: new gas valves & electronics appearing on gas water heaters.
Question about vulnerability to surge.

1. Bradford White is shipping all gas water heaters with ICON Honeywell gas valve that allows optional electronics for timer, etc

2. Rheem has a version of Honeywell's valve on some models, with digital read-out

3. American/ AO Smith also has a version of Honeywell valve on its Energy-Smart gas heater, although no electronics or connection to power is mentioned

4. American/AO Smith has electronic controls on its high efficiency

The electronics on these gas water heaters seems unprotected from power surge via lightning strike or solar storm >>> the instructions say to connect to nearby 115V.

Question: How safe are these electronic systems to power surge? Should customers put a surge protector on these water heaters?

Hello: I don't know what protection is built into the controls, but I'm sure the controls are not inexpensive to replace.  I'd put protection on any electronics worth anything.  Here is a site that might be useful.  Good observation! ;)  http://reviewsurgeprotector.com/
