I'm a new member who has been trying to send a message about my water heater but it's very hard to find the place where I can send one.

Two days ago I sent one addressed to 'Admin' (I didn't know who to address it to but it wouldn't let me leave the TO field blank.)  Now I can't find my message anywhere.  Did I address it to the wrong person?  The subject was 'Effex'.

Then half an hour ago I tried to send one to 'Moderator' and it said that was not valid and when I tried going back to enter a different name, I lost the text of my message - very frustrating.

Could you post a hint on your screen for new members as to where to go to send a message and who to address it to?

Thanks,
ddh

The truth is, I don't sign on as Admin very often and don't expect to be asked questions. Post your question here in the forum. I don't have the answer myself, but someone else who hangs out here may.

You may be confusing sending a privatel message with posting a question (PM versus New Topic).

If you don't know to whom you need to send a message, post it for all to see, just as you did when you posted the question that I'm responding to now. Instead of posting a question asking how to send messages, post your question regarding a water heater.

The button you need to click on to post a message is easy to miss if you don't know where to look for it. Go to The Tank (the screen before this one that shows a list of messages) and click on the button below the top right corner that reads "New Topic." That will bring up a new screen on which you can compose whatever question you wish to post.

Later, when someone responds to your question, you can REPLY to their post and, if you wish, include their name in your reply. For example, you could reply to the message you're reading now by writing "John, thanks for trying, but you completely misunderstood my question. Besides, you wrote way too much." Your reply will be posted as a continuation of the topic for everyone to read.

If you want to spare me public humiliation, you can hit PM instead of REPLY, and that will enable you to send a message to me alone. It can be confusing. One might suppose that PM stands for Post Message, but I believe it stands for Private Message.

To access your own messages, click on the words "No new messages" (or "1 new message") near the top center of the screen. Then you'll be able to read your private messages or address messages to others. You can try it out by sending yourself a message. Member IDs are used for addressing messages. For example, I would be Jeeter, not John.

Good luck, John

Thanks, John, that was very helpful.

I never would have guessed that PM stood for 'Private message' or that the way to send a question to the forum was to click on 'New Topic'.  I was looking for something that said 'Write' or 'Send Message'.   I haven't had experience with how to use blogs and forums.

Ok, what did I do wrong this time?  - I certainly didn't type the part of my previous message that says 'javascript', etc.

%20'%20');% if I know. Perhaps you composed your message elsewhere and then used cut and paste to post it. Anyway, I sympathize with your earlier struggles. I too was looking for a Post-a-Message button before I finally came across New Topic hiding off the right.
