Current heater is now leaking & buying a new one to install tomorrow. Electric 50 gal type - Kenmore $275 & GE $311 right now. I understand GE has a better anode, but is it worth the extra price to begin with? It might need to be replaced sooner on the Kenmore but the price diff right now seems to go the Kenmore way. Also, would it be best to try to 'crack' the threads on the anode before installing so that it will easier to check annually? Anything else I can do on very short notice to the new water heater before installing it? I can't really wait in a house with a family of 5. Thank you, bolini

The anode is "better" only in the sense that it's magnesium, not aluminum. However, it will have a resistor in it that will lower its driving current to the same as aluminum, so the odds of it being replaced sooner than the Kenmore are doubtful. I have a conflict of interest here, but you could also buy the Kenmore and replace the aluminum anode with the thicker magnesium one I sell. But whatever, it's a good idea to pull the factory anode and reinstall it with six wraps of Teflon tape so you can more easily check it in future. Randy Schuyler
