Hello, I have a GE40M06AAG water heater that is not working. I have 240 volts coming in, and have 240 volts at both contact points on uppper element. However, no voltage going to the lower element and the water heater is not heating. This afternoon, I bought a new upper and lower thermostat and replaced both, and still the same problem? The only thing left would be the two elements, if one is is there a way to test them with out having to remove them? Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.

Hello: Have a look here: http://www.waterheaterrescue.com/pages/WHRpages/English/Troubleshooting/Tanklets/electric-water-heater-issues.html You'll see how to test elements in place and get an idea what's going on, or not. It sounds to me like the upper element is not behaving Yours, Larry

Symptoms indicate the upper element is burned in two. Go to the reference listed by Larry. Reference the picture of the upper thermostat. Let's assume top element is burned in two: Turn power off to WH. Determinate and isolate (insulate or completely remove) the yellow and blue wires for the upper element from the top thermostat. Determinate the black wire (which feeds the lower thermostat) from the top thermostat and reland on the top thermostat where the yellow wire was landed on the top thermostat. Be sure all screws are tight. Restore power. Now the WH will heat via the lower element provided lower element is good. Now you can replace both elements later when the lower element burns out (if it ever does). You lose the "quick recovery" feature but the WH will work just fine. David
