I installed an oil fired water heater to replace an electric unit less than 3 years ago. It is a JW317RF model and I am on the 3rd unit. I have replaced it twice within its 12-month warranty due to leaks. The units have failed just shy of the 12 month period. I have well water, which is tested regularly. The PH is fine and the hardness is moderate. I notice a yellow discoloration usually within a few months and outlet of the heater seems to be plugged when the unit is being replaced. I have a whole house filter for sediment and the pressure does not seem to be too high. I do not know if it is a piping configuration issue or a water issue.  I drain the heater in the summer and test the relief valve. The water exiting the relief is rust colored and the drained water has mild sediment.

Any suggestions?

I would want to place a pressure gauge on the heater that will log the highest level pressure at anytime. Home Depot sells these for a few dollars. You could have pressure spikes or a closed system causing your problems.

Hello:  I agree with Ej.  You might have a check valve on the well that creates problems with thermal expansion.  An expansion tank will help if you find pressure spikes.
