Have replaced faucet mixing cartridges. Have done crossconnection test..Cold water runs from hot water faucets with good pressure with this test. Hot water pipe from tank is hot. No problem til new tank or before. No problems before new tank & home 8 yrs. old. Running water into washer will get us hot water, only this works. We have turned off faucets to clothes washer and then no very hot water again. Last edited on Sun Jul 25th, 2010 12:51 am by rainbow |

Hello: You know there is a cross connection... at least one. A way for one person to test is to close all hot water stops; under sinks, washing machine, even stops on the shower valves if you have them. Now open one hot tap, (preferably at a sink where hot and cold tap are separate). Open its stop valve. Does any water flow? If so, leave it running and walk around listening to every valve that mixes hot and cold. You should hear water running someplace, (likely a shower valve). Fix the noisy valve/s and try it again. Another possible cause of trouble would be a hot water recirculating line.. but only if you have one Are there any other appliances, things; like a well or softener, or solar? Yours, Larry

Hello: Tell me more about the system you have. Describe the equipment also. Water obeys physics. There will be something to find Yours, Larry

Larry, gas water heater, replaced all mixing cartridgesin house. Direct pipe from water heater to house. One story. definitely water crossing over. Only very hot when clothes washer filling and washer probably closet line to heater. Good pressure all over in both cold & hot lines. Cold water in pipe going out of heater to house with cold shut off valve to heater closed and nothing coming directly out of tank. I took pipe coming from heater apart and when turning on cold water to house it infiltrated hot water pipe to house. Hope this helps. Rainbow

Hello: In testing, you turned off all hot side shut off valves and cold still gets into the hot side. The only thing left is probably shower valve/s. These can leak from cold to hot even when the shower is off. Sometimes folks put a shut off valve on the shower arm so they can control it from there. That can create a very nice cross connection Try this. Run water however you need to to get hot at the shower. Now shut it off and go run "hot" somewhere else for fifteen seconds. Go back to the shower and turn on the hot. What comes out first thing? Is it hot right away as it should be, or does it take more than a few seconds to get hot? If it takes any time at all, you should suspect that valve as somehow, cold got into the hot side in a matter of seconds. The cartridges you replaced... I've had trouble with the brass ones made to fit Moen. The plastic (polysulphone) ones do not allow cross connection. So, just because you replaced them doesn't mean the problem is fixed. What brand of faucet do you have? Yours, Larry

Larry, did what you said to the 2 showers we have and both functioned normally with very hot water. Seems running water in faucets elsewhere makes water to showers ok but only if after running faucet elsewhere. We have Price Phister faucets and replaced cartridges with plastic cartrides in shower heads. The single faucet at kitchen sink acts same way as shower faucets.

Hello: I remain a touch confused about your plumbing system, but then many things in life do this to me So, in drawing water, does it start hot and then cool off in minutes or does it start cold and stay there? You see there may be more than one problem at work here. A poorly placed dip tube combined with a cross connection sounds like a direct path to confusion. Do not pass go... Yours, Larry ps. One more test for you to do and report back: Go to the heater and touch both hot and cold lines. Have somebody else run hot water. You should feel the cold side (which would have started warm) get cold and the hot side should heat up substantially. Let it run for five minutes and keep close track of the temperature in both lines. If the cold ever warms at all, you likely have another place where cold is getting into the hot side. If the hot side starts cooling, you know the dip tube is thumbing its long blue nose at you from somewhere other than where it should be. Yours, Larry

Larry, Cold inlet pipe of heater stayed cold and hot stayed very hot. We pulled dip tube earlier and it was okay. Water from faucets almost always start cold and take a while to get hot..a lot longer than 15 sec. If there had been hot water left in line at faucet it will run hot for few seconds when turned on and then go cold before getting hot again, even if just ran earlier. The cold can be very cold. We have to run a long time to get hot. Once hot again, it stays hot doesn't seem to flucuate. Last edited on Tue Aug 3rd, 2010 02:56 pm by rainbow |

Sometimes the place where you get the hottest water is where the cross connection is. Try removing the hoses to the washer, is water comming out with the valves closed. Retest rest of house to see if hot water improves.

Larry, shut off valves at washer. I took hoses off and no water from valves. Kitchen faucet nearest to washer and gets hottest when hot line to washer is running. I shut off valves to kitchen faucet and no water comes out. We donot have shut off valves at our two showers. Thanks for sticking with us. Last edited on Thu Aug 5th, 2010 02:44 pm by rainbow |
