Good Day, I have the exact problem one of the other posters has or had here. We have lived in this house since new and never had a water hammer problem until we had the water heater replaced, now when we use the garden hoses outside we get a loud bang. When I turn the cold water feed off at the water heater the banging stops. In reading the other post here there were suggestions made but I don't see a post that says the problem was resolved. Any Ideas? Thanks, DennisF

Hello: Does your heater have heat trap nipples? Also, do you know what the static water pressure is? Yours, Larry

Thanks for the reply eleent, Not sure of the answer to either of those questions. I know I have good water pressure here but don't know the exact pressure. If in deed it has the heat trap nipples, what would they do to cause the banging? DennisF

To determine your static water pressure, see the second post (from Undee70ss) at: http://www.thetankatwaterheaterrescue.com/forums/forum3/2706.html You can purchase a water pressure test gauge at Home Depot for about $10. It comes with instructions and is very easy to use. John

Hello: Some heat trap nipples have a ball check in them that might try to flow back when cold water is opened up, lowering pressure to the water heater. The ball slams into it's stop and you get noise. There is some sort of valve in the hot side or turning water to the heater off would have no effect. I've seen folks put a standard swing check in the cold supply to the heater and it causes exactly your problem. If the static pressure is high, simply getting it to 40-60 psi will help get rid of the hammer problem as well as helping the plumbing to last. Yours, Larry

There is no check valve there that I can see, the heat trap nipples if indeed they have a ball check sounds logical to me that it could be the culprit. As I said there was no problem here until this new water heater was installed. I have the company that installed the water heater coming here on Thursday to see what they can sort out. I'll keep you posted of the findings and what ever the resolution is. DennisF

Hot water heater installer was here yesterday and indeed determined it is the heat trap nipples causing the water hammer. He said they can be removed if I choose. Its a relief to at least know where the problem is, its been driving me crazy for some time. Thank you all here for your input and suggestions I do appreciate it. DennisF
