I recently had to shock my well w/ chlorine to kill the bad sulphur-smelling water. Now the cold is fine and the hot smells a lot like hungarian yellow wax peppers as opposed to rotten egg / sulphur. I put 1/3 cup of bleach in the tank, circulated thru the hot faucets and let stand a couple hours. Then drained the tank and flushed the lines. But it still has the smell.
I replaced my old stinky magnesium anode rod in 2005 with a Al/Zn/Sn alloy type of anode and that fixed the rotten egg smell in 2005 until this recent event. I pulled that anode rod the other day and it had no corrosion whatsoever ( i could see writing on it that I put there w/ a sharpie in 2005). But it was coated with some build up and the metal was not longer bright and shiny.
Could the rod just be passivated or ineffective because of this build up on the rod, keeping the anode metal from making good contact w/ the water in the tank.
My water is softened. I am in NW Penna.
Thanks for any comments,
