 I live in a mobile home with a 30 gallon electric State Industries water heater. It has a single lower 3800 watt element. The home is a 96'. Since we moved in 2 years ago we have had the rotten egg smell/bad taste, and since we never had the money to address the problem we have been buying bottled water. Thats off topic though. We havent had any trouble with hot water until yesterday. The faucet was letting out alot of gas/air and then it quit... nothing but ice cold water and absolutely no noise coming from the heater. The limit switch (red button on thermo) was not tripped. We DO have rusty water that stains our toilet and bathtub. I know it has to be either the element or the thermostat, but we are limited on money and I'm curious, with the info ive provided, if anyone has any clues as to which one it might be. I do have a voltmeter, and some electrical experience, but mostly on cars... Im hoping when I test the thermo and element that I dont turn into a crispy do-it-yourselfer. Any advice on testing?? Any ideas or if any more info is needed please reply, I would be greatful. Thanks!

I suggest you go down about 10 posts to one titled "Desperately seeking hot water." That should give you a start. Randy Schuyler

Hello: Another thing to consider is the "letting out a lot of air" that your heater did. Either work was done on the plumbing mains or your heater generated gas from the action of the anode, but it's possible the upper element wasn't actually in water as it needs to be. If it dry fired, it would likely have burned out. Test it with your meter to see if it has passed on. It likely needs replacing. Yours, Larry ps. Just reread your first post. No upper element. Do rely on the meter to let you know what's going on!

Thanks for the replies.... bought a 3500 watt 240 volt element today, its all Lowes had. Might save a little on the bill each month. Now I can only hope its not the thermostat, considering I have no idea how much they cost. Thanks again.
