hello,

so glad that I found this website as it has provide much needed information.

I am on a well, have no softner system installed and have been on the well for 16 years with no problems. in february of 2011 my water pressure was varing ( low and high) it was diagnosied as a bad pressure tank. replaced the tank and presure switch. about 2 months later have developed a strong smelly sulfer smell in the hot and cold water. was suggested to shock chlorinate the system which was completed following about a 15 hour procedure using bleach. purged the system and all was good. the smell came back mid june, was recommended to replace the water heater, which we did, the original water heater would not drain due to excessive sludge in the unit, system was ok for about a week and again the smelly water. just anticapating that the smell will be back soon and what do I need to do to eliminate the issue. I appreicate in advance any and all assistance.

Just pro forma, make sure the odor is coming from the water heater. If that is so, then only the hot water should smell, and it should smell at all fixtures. If not, then there is a different problem to solve

That said, most of the time, if no softener is being used, an aluminum/zinc anode will take care of this. Once in awhile it doesn't, but mostly it does and the anode costs one third as much as a powered anode

Put the peroxide in the water heater, two pints of drugstore peroxide per 40 gallons.

You have the idea: anode, hot or cold nipples.

Hello Guys,

ordered my new anode rod from you about a month ago, water smell was fine and has returned today. It is just hot water that is smelling bad. I am on a well and do not have a softner.Hoping that you can provide me some more of your expertise as what to do next. seems like about every 4-6 weeks need to shock the system. As always you are appreicated and I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello:  One possible source of trouble is water heater size vs hot water usage.  If the heater is big and gets little use, odor is far more likely.  So, how many gallons is your heater and how many people are using hot water?  We may need to encourage you to take longer showers

Yours,  Larry

Or it may be that this is one of the times aluminum/zinc just isn't good enough, even though you're not softening. I don't like when people wind up buying both kinds of anodes, but it happens once in awhile.

Pour bleach down the drain. There is a good chance the water heater is not the culprit but bacteria in the shower drain.

A powered anode will only help if it's the water heater causing the odor. Again, it should smell everywhere, if that's the case. Pour bleach down the shower drain and see what that does. Also, open the water heater drain and see if that water smells. If not, it is not the water heater.

Hello Randy,

I have poured bleach down the shower drain with no change as you recommended.I have drained water out of the heater and do not notice the smell. however I can put some peroxide in the water heater and the smell  in the shower goes away for a few days and then returns. Thanks for your advice and persistence to assist me with this very anoying problem.

I think you've done your homework. A powered anode should fix it. I'm out again, but I'll have more Wednesday.
