Our water heater will light, run, and turn off but it will not turn back on again.  This was discovered by my not so amused wife when she had a less than soothing shower.  Over the phone I had a plumber tell me it was the heating element and it would cost $400 to repair.  Now, I'm no fool, I can get a BRAND NEW one for about that same amount.  This water heater is 2 years old.

Reading through here, I hear alot about the thermocouple.  Could it be that?  If so, how do you get the darned thing out?  Also, can it be removed without a cascade of water???

If it's not that, would it be the thermostat???

I just don't want SUCKER planted across my forhead and I want my wife to think I'm a hero.

:D

Your post talks about two seperate heating methods.  Elements are used on electric heaters and thermocouples are used on combustible heaters.  A model number would provide some insite in to what you have.

Okay you have a gas heater.  First suggestion is that you never call that plumber again.  Second is there is a pilot lighting instructions on the front of the heater.  Follow these instructions then report back your findings.

Well, I did that already, have taken the burner thingamagiggy out and taken it to my Uncle's plumber friend who informed me I have one of the NEW thermocouples...I guess they have to be special ordered.  Yea me. :(

He gave me some suggestions and I'm  trying them.  The burner lights...it's going right now...but will it relight???

My wife is pacing.  This isn't good.  LOL.  She's got that maternal thing.  A baby in the house, laundry to do and no hot water.  Not to mention NO hot shower for her if I don't get this fixed.  That equates to a crabby momma.  You sympathize I'm sure.

FYI, the wife stepped in the shower this morning and I braced for the sigh and the subsequent noise that would follow...none came, what I heard was, "Yes!  Oh, it feels so nice"

So, lesson learned.  Vacuuming AROUND the water heater isn't enough.  When I change the filter on the furnace, I will take the assembly out and vac inside and under as well.

Whew!

Happy endings are good!  Thanks Ej for your good advise and help, and Jeffrey66; let us know if it misbehaves again and we'll do some more troubleshooting.

Yours,  Larry

I have this same exact water heater with the same exact problem. Can you tell me exactly what you did to fix it?

P.S. My fiance is acting just how your wife did :(

I'm not familiar with that model although it is most likely under a model than I am.  Do you have a black screen at the very bottom of the heater down by where it sits?
