We had a new water heater installed to replace old one.  Now any time we shut off cold water from anywhere in the house or using outside hose, we get banging noise in the cold water pipe directly on top and entering the top of the water heater. Sounds like it is coming from within the water heater. Plumber spent hours, but can't figure it out.  Thinks water hammer, but no problem with old water heater and started with installation of this new one.  He changed out the cold water shut off valve to the water heater and the vacuum seal thingy installed between the cold water shut off valve and the pipe entering the tank.  It is a Rudd Rheem electric water heater, 80 gal.  He thought heat trap, but says they must have removed to install a second anode due to the 10 year warranty.  He drained entire household water system and refilled, still no resolution.  The noise DOES STOP COMPLETELY when he shuts off the cold water valve to the water heater, but once you turn it back on, banging comes right back.  He says he does not understand how the installation of this new water heater would cause the problem and isn't a "water heater" problem because it only happens with cold water, but this was not a problem with old water heater. Can anyone offer help?

Hello:  There is some sort of valve in the cold water supply to the heater. It may be a heat trap nipple or a check valve.  I'd suspect heat trap nipples.  It may even be the nipple on the hot side.  Fortunately, it isn't a really strange problem... no Ghostbusters needed   Just make sure to check both hot and cold for heat traps.  They can be replaced with standard plastic lined nipples and long flex connectors used to create silent heat traps.

Thanks Larry for the reply and it sounds like what the plumber thought, but he says he could not find a heat trap on this water heater!?  I uploaded a photo so maybe you could point out where unless the heat traps you are referring to are internal.  I have seen the long flex connectors in a photo (probably this site and will have to get a copy to share with plumber).  Missy :)

Larry:  One more thing.  You can feel hot water mixing with cold water in the pipe that is horizontal between the vaccuum valve (with black top on it) and the cold water feed shut off.  Missy :)

Hello:  Those silver colored pipes sticking up from the heater are probably heat traps.    It looks like 1/2" pipe was used to the heater.  This would increase the velocity of water going into and out of the heater, possibly adding to the noise problem.  I'd cut the pipe back a ways and solder an adaptor to go from 1/2" copper to 3/4" male thread.  While things are apart, try poking a screwdriver down into the pipe nipples.  If it won't/ can't go into the pipe far at all, they likely are heat trap nipples and should be replaced with plain lined nipples.  Then put flex connectors in place, in an upside down "U" shape.  This gives you quiet heat traps and lower water velocity.  The vacuum breaker will need to be moved farther away from the heater to do what I've described.

Yours,  Larry

Larry:  Thanks so much.  You make sense and you explained in a manner even I can understand.  This website and forum is the best reference I have found.  You are the only one who provided a solution that I feel confident to use.  I appreciate it.  Missy
