We had to shut off the hot water at the water heater because of a leak in our laundry room a few days ago. When we turned the water back on, there was hot water for a day, now it's cold. I'm thinking that the hot water that we had was residual that was in the tank.

Not sure what to do. We have an Eagle Delux 121023, which I think is like 20 years old. It was working fine prior to having to shut the water off, so I don't think it a matter of needing to replace it...

Any thoughts? I was thinking we may need to reset a thermostat or something, but it has insulation packed in the "Access" panels, so we're not really sure what we are doing.

Any thoughts?

Electric water heater? Is there a red reset button? Is the breaker tripped or the fuses blown in the fusebox?

If you are unfamiliar with working with electricity and using a meter, call a pro, as 240 volts is dangerous.

Since you mentioned insulation packed in access panels, I assume you have 240 V electric water heater with two access panel.

If water heater parts got wet ... the water heater might trip circuit breaker ... and if you reset circuit breaker on wet water heater, then water heater might be electrical shock hazard.

If water heater parts did not get wet: Suddenly less hot water could be caused by tripped 240 circuit breaker > or circuit breaker has shorted on one side and water heater not receiving full 240V >> inside water heater access panels, other causes can be tripped red reset button on upper thermostat > or upper element burned out > or bad upper or lower thermostat > loose or shorted wire.

Check circuit breaker since it's easy to get to ... if you want to electrically test circuit breaker and water heater parts, you need multimeter and experience with basic electricity:

How to: Troubleshoot electric water heater
